| It's something you want to learn, but never want to have to use.
15-year-old Sarah Desthers, of Smithtown, saved her mother's life by performing the Heimlich Maneuver when she recognized her mother's airway was obstructed and was choking.
Sarah's quick-thinking and fast actions are results of a First Aid/CPR class she took in high school. She did exactly what she was trained to do, remained calm, and saved her mother's life. Although this is only an elective in school, it is training that all children (and adults) should be learning.
You never want to be in a situation to use it, but you want to be prepared in case you are.
From everyone in the Nesconset Fire Department- Great job, Sarah! We applaud you!
