Nesconset Division of Fire Prevention and Education

The goal of this division is to educate our children, local community groups and business’ about Fire Safety.

The program is directed by Patricia Colombraro & the Chief of the Department

Each year, our members spend numerous hours at our local K-8 public school teaching and providing lifesaving lessons to students about fire, it’s behavior and creating safety in their homes. 

We teach the theory of “getting out alive” explaining rules about safely evacuating their homes in the event of an emergency. Applying the lessons of “EDITH” exit drills in the home, they are taught to know two ways out and go to a pre-arranged meeting place where all family members will  meet in case of a fire. 
We bring our “new, state of the art” fire prevention trailer which is a fully simulated mockup of a small home. It has simulated smoke, detector activation and a first-floor exit to create a fun yet real life experience for children and adults.

Our fire safety simulator also has modern technology teaching both adults and teens about kitchen safety and weather preparedness.

Adults can learn how to extinguish a fire using a fire extinguisher simulator as well as learn more about barbeque & propane safety. Electrical, gas water shut offs are also among the subjects that are discussed.

Additionally free CPR classes are offered to the community throughout the year. We also offer a babysitters safety course for teens. 

Each October we host our annual Open House Fire Prevention Day at our headquarters. Multiple fire safety stations are offered to kids and parents with fun activities and free giveaways. Live demonstrations are available throughout the day along with free food and drinks. It is a great way for the community to spend a day learning about and getting to know their fire department.
