2134 hours. The Nesconset Fire Department was activated for a report of a structure fire in the vicinity of Smithtown Boulevard and Old Nichols Road. 911 advised that they were taking multiple calls and when 1st Assistant Chief Doug Sneider arrived he confirmed that he had a working house fire. While units stretched multiple hand lines to mount their attack, mutual aid was requested to the scene from Hauppauge for a ladder, Smithtown for a engine, Ronkonkoma for an engine, Centereach for an ambulance and Saint James for an engine. Crews made an aggressive attack as the fire rolled across the attic of the single story wood frame private dwelling, confining the fire to the area of origin and the attic. The fire was brought under control within an hour. Although there were no smoke detectors in the building, the two occupants escaped with their cat, unharmed. The house sustained extensive damage as a result of the fire.

The Smithtown Fire Marshals Office handled the investigation and determined that the fire was a result of an improperly placed kerosene heater.
