On Sunday, May 3, 2014 at 18:46 hours, the Nesconset Fire Department was activated for EMS alarm for a 15-year-old boy having seizures in the vicinity of Bobby’s Burger Palace at the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove, New York. Arrival at scene Suffolk County Police had pulled the patient out of a vehicle and were performing CPR on the sidewalk. The police offices attached their automated external defibrillator on the 15-year-old and delivered a shock with no return of pulse and continued to perform CPR. Immediately Paramedic Kathleen McBride took over the scene and directed the police officers to continue CPR while she performed advanced life procedures.

Volunteer personnel Lieutenant Daniel Madden, Firefighter Christopher Zarnitz and EMT-B Mary Greco arrived on the Nesconset Fire Department Ambulance and assume basic life support care under the supervision of the Paramedic McBride.

The patient was still in serious condition and resuscitative maneuvers continue to be performed in route, when suddenly Lt. Daniel Madden advised the crew that the patient has starting to breathe and the return of a spontaneous pulse.

As a result of their actions, the patient arrived at Stony Brook University Hospital with the pulse and breathing. The Hospital staff stabilized the patient who made a full recovery and was later released from the hospital to return home to his family.
