At 7:06am on Friday, December 8, 2023 the Nesconset Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire on the loading dock at Macy’s in the Smithaven Mall.

Engine 4-4-1 arrived on scene as Centereach firefighters were forcing entry to the loading dock. Nesconset firefighters stretched a 2-1/2” hose line and assisted with gaining entry to the loading dock and searching for the extent of the fire. The hose line was used to complete the extinguishment of a fire held in place by the automatic fire sprinkler system.

Fire department units remained on scene for an extended duration due to smoke spreading out on all levels of the Macy’s store. Heavy Rescue 4-4-9 also responded with an assortment of electric fans to assist with ventilating the structure.

Nesconset Firefighters operated under the command of Second Assistant Chief Christopher Zarnitz and returned to station at 10:03am.

Did you know? The town line between the Town of Smithtown and the Town of Brookhaven goes directly down the middle of the mall with Nesconset Fire Department covering west side and the Centereach Fire Department covering the east side. Both departments respond together to any report of smoke or fire anywhere in the mall, and routinely handle all other emergencies in their respective side of the mall.
