At 5:35pm on Friday, November 3, 2023 the Nesconset Fire Department Responded to a report of a structure fire at the Hamlet Rehabilitation Facility on Southern Boulevard. Multiple calls to 911 reported there were people trapped in an elevator and there was smoke and a possible fire.

Assistant Chief AJ Anderson arrived on scene, performed an initial size up and transmitted there was a light smoke condition present and the occupants were still in the elevator. Further investigation determined there was only smoke from the elevator equipment and no fire. The occupants were removed from the elevator shortly thereafter and received medical assessment before being returned to the care of the facility. Ventilation was performed to remove light smoke that was present on three levels of the facility.

Nesconset Engines 4-4-1 and 4-4-2 responded and were assisted by the crews from St James Engine 4-3-2, Ronkonkoma Engine 5-24-6 and Lakeland Tower Ladder 3-13-3. Nesconset Ambulance 4-4-6B, First Responder 4-4-80, and Stony Brook Hospital Medic-45 performed medical assessments on residents and facility workers affected by the smoke condition.

All units operated under the command of Assistant Chief AJ Anderson and returned to stations at 6:34pm. Units from the Town of Smithtown Fire Marshal’s Office responded and provided support on the scene.
