At 10:21am on Tuesday, November 22, 2022 the Nesconset Fire Department responded to a Structure Fire on 50 Acre Road in Head of the Harbor. Initial arriving units found a building used as a repair garage fully involved on fire. The fire also communicated to other storage structures in close proximity to the fire building. Inside the main structure an acetylene tank exploded and two large propane tanks impinged upon by the fire had their pressure relief valves activated sending a stream of flame 30-40 feet in the air.

Nesconset Engine 4-4-1 arrived on scene and assisted in the effort to establish a positive water supply. The nearest hydrant was quite a distance from the entry road to the property, and the fire building was set back a few hundred feet from the road. A water relay was established using 4-4-1 and Nissequoge Engine 4-5-2 to feed St James Engine 4-3-2 supplying their Tower Ladder 4-3-7.

After the main body of fire was knocked down by Tower Ladder 4-3-7 two 1-3/4” hose lines were deployed from 4-4-1 to complete the extinguishment of what remained of the buildings.

There were also units from the Smithtown, St James, Hauppauge, and Setauket Fire Departments were on scene. The Town of Islip Hazardous Materials Team responded to burn off the remaining contents of the propane tanks. Fire Marshals from the Town of Smithtown Department of Public Safety also responded.
