Do I need any prior experience?

No, the Nesconset Fire Department will provide you with all of the training necessary.

what if i don't want to run into burning buildings?

No problem. Interior structural firefighting is something we will train you to do if you so desire, it is entirely up to you. However, providing Emergency Medical Assistance to the community is a very important aspect of what we do, and as such, we have members who are dedicated to doing just that, without having to also train as structural firefighters.

What would be expected of me?

All new members are placed on probation for a period of eighteen months. During that time, training will be your main focus, and as such, you are expected to attend all Drills that apply to your position in the Department. Our usual drill periods are on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings, and here you will be trained by experienced members of our department on specific techniques and equipment we utilize. You would also need to attend certain meetings normally held on the 3rd Monday of the month.

In addition, you would be enrolled in a New York State Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) Course. This course is given at the Department's expense, and provides both classroom and hands on training in Basic Life Support and the use of Automated Electronic Defibrillators (AED). You would also take the 'Basic Fire School for EMS'through the Suffolk Count Fire Academy. This class is specifically designed for people, within the Fire Service, not assigned to Fire Fighting Tasks. If, however, you desire to be an interior structural firefighter, you will receive certified Firefighter I & Firefighter II instruction in lieu of the 'Basic Fire School for EMS'course.

How do i join?

You can pick up an application at our Headquarters building, located at 25 Gibbs Pond Road during normal business hours, or download it here;(the application is a PDF file and requires Adobe Acrobat Reader). You can either return the application in person or mail it back to us (Attn: 3rd Assistant Chief) at our Headquarters address. Prospective candidates will be interviewed by our Investigating Committee at which time the requirements for membership will be more fully explained. Following this investigation, you would be sent for a physical, at our expense.

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact our 3rd Assistant Chief.
