2007 Big Rig Rescue

In October, 2007 the Nesconset Fire Department participated in the Big Rig Rescue Seminar at the Nassau County Fire Academy. The day consisted of three evolutions in which particpants from last year's seminar continued their hands on training.

The first scenario simulated a school bus that rolled over on top of two cars. The incoming response had to secure the bus, perform searches on the two cars, and then search for victims inside the school bus. One victim was extricated by tunnelling through the back seat of one of the crushed cars. The patient in the second vehicle was extricated using traditional extrication techniques.

The second evolution simulated a four door car that impacted and under-ran the rear of a garbage truck. After securing the vehicles for safety the teams prepared the rear of the garbage truck for a lift and prepared the car to be pulled out from underneath the compactor body. When the lifting teams on either side of the garbage truck were ready of the lift and after positioning spotters in the front and rear to watch for load shifting or secondary hazards, the lifting teams coordinated enough lift to pull the vehicle from underneath the garbage truck.

The last evolution simulated a box truck that over-ran a two door sedan, combined with a car that ran into the cargo area inside the box truck. A school bus turned over on its side complicated the operations. In this final evolution all hands present at the drill operated to mitigate a variety of situations.
